Master of Arts in Education - Mixed mode

Introduction

Master of Arts (Education) Mixed Mode Program aims to promote the professionalism of teachers, teacher trainers, educational administrators and professionals in educational-related services. This program is intended to produce graduates with deep understanding of content knowledge, theories, developments and issues in respective speacialisation areas in education; and who also possess skills to conduct critically reflective education-related research. In total, 12 areas of educational specialisation are offered in this program:

  1. Curriculum Studies
  2. Education Management and Administration
  3. Psychometrics and Educational Measurement
  4. Science Education
  5. English Language Education/TESOL
  6. Educational Technology and Multimedia
  7. Educational Psychology
  8. Mathematics Education
  9. Malay Language Education
  10. Special Education
  11. Early Childhood Education
  12. Higher Education
Applicants can choose the area of specialisation according to their interest and qualification. This program comprises of 50% coursework (20 units) and 50% research (20 units). For the coursework component, students need to complete 3 general courses and 3 specialisation courses. For the research component, students need to complete a dissertation of 25,000 to 30,000 words. The duration of study for full-timers is 1 to 2 years, while for part-timers is 2 to 4 years. Lectures and tutorials are conducted in the evening, between 5pm and 10pm.
Admission Requirements

Applicants should possess the following:

  1. A related Bachelor degree with Honours (at least a Second Class Lower or CGPA 2.75 or equivalent) in the field applied.
    AND
    (i) At least 1 year of teaching experience or experience related to education.
    (ii) Local candidate has to fulfil the Bahasa Malaysia requirement.
    OR
  2. A Bachelor degree with Honours (at least a Second Class Lower or CGPA 2.75 or equivalent).
    AND
    (i) At least 2 years of teaching experience or experience related to education.
    (ii) Local candidate has to fulfil the Bahasa Malaysia requirement.
Language Requirement

(Applicable for International Applicants Only)

  • A minimum score of 550 in Paper-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    OR
  • A minimum score of Band 6.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    OR
  • Any other requirements approved by USM Senate.

  • Part-time: Min 2 years/ Max 4 years
Candidature

This programme is offered as a mixed-mode programme, i.e. it comprises a component of taught core courses (50%), and a research component (50%). Students may choose to undertake the Master of Arts (Education) Mixed-Mode Degree Programme either as Full-time or Part-time candidates. The minimum duration of study for Full-time candidates is one year (made up of 2 semesters) and for Part-time candidates is two years (made up of 4 semesters).

Program structure

The curriculum for the Master of Arts (Education) Mixed-Mode Programme consists of two components: Coursework Component and Research Component. The total number of units required to graduate is 40 units. Each student must register for 6 courses (with a total of 20 units) in the Coursework Component and the Dissertation (20 units) in the Research Component.
