USM Welcomes Toho University Delegation for a Meaningful Global Learning Experience
6 February 2026 - The School of Educational Studies (PPIP), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), recently welcomed a delegation from Toho University, Japan, consisting of five students accompanied by Prof. Dr. Hatanaka Toshinobu and Prof. Dr. Takahashi Kazuhiro, for a six-day inbound buddies exchange programme held in Penang and Kedah.
The programme, spearheaded by ChM. Dr. Nur Jahan Ahmad, offered participants a valuable blend of academic learning, cultural exploration, and experiential activities. Throughout the programme, participants explored the heritage of Georgetown, engaged in nature-based learning at Penang Hill, and participated in interactive STEM workshops at SEAMEO RECSAM.
A key highlight of the programme was the mangrove planting activity at Sungai Merbok, Kedah. The activity provided participants with meaningful exposure to environmental conservation efforts while reinforcing the importance of protecting natural ecosystems. This initiative also reflected the programme’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
Beyond academic and environmental components, the programme fostered meaningful interaction between the Japanese delegation and USM students. Through collaborative activities, discussions, and bilingual poster presentations, participants strengthened communication skills and developed deeper intercultural understanding.
The programme reflects USM’s continued commitment to promoting global learning experiences, strengthening international collaboration, and nurturing sustainability awareness within the academic community.
