PENANG, 2026 – The School of Educational Studies (SES), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), successfully organised the Teaching Swimming for Special Needs Course 2026, bringing together special education teachers, therapists, parents, caregivers, swimming instructors and coaches from private swimming academies.
The one-day course provided participants with practical and research-informed knowledge on teaching swimming to children with special educational needs. The programme focused on understanding different diagnoses, adapting instructional approaches, promoting water safety and creating learning environments that are safe, structured and inclusive.
A key component of the course was the introduction of the A.S.S.I.S.T. Framework, which provides a structured approach to planning and delivering swimming lessons that respond to the individual needs and abilities of children with special educational needs.
The course was led by Dr. Nur Amalina Samsudin, who shared her expertise in inclusive aquatic education and equipped participants with knowledge and practical strategies that can be applied across various settings, including schools, swimming academies, therapy centres and community programmes.
The programme concluded with a closing ceremony officiated by the Dean of the School of Educational Studies, AP Dr. Rahimi Che Aman, who reaffirmed SES USM’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote inclusive education and strengthen professional capacity in special education.
The programme also received strong support from Ts. Dr. Rozniza Zaharuddin, Chair of the Special Education Programme, whose encouragement contributed to strengthening professional development and knowledge-sharing in the field of special education.
