USM TESOL Students Explore Culture, Literacy and Community Engagement in Indonesia

From 27 July to 3 August, nine TESOL students from School of Educational Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), comprising four male and five female students, were selected to participate in an international academic programme at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), Indonesia, under the guidance of Professor Kamarul Kabilan.
The programme, entitled Kegiatan Workshop Budaya dan Edukatif: From the Universe to Bibliotheca, and Back! (U2BB), carried the theme “From Culture to Comprehension: Reading, Identity, and Community Engagement.” The programme was conducted at the UM Library and served as a collaborative learning initiative involving local and international university students.
The programme aimed to broaden participants’ global perspectives, enhance their reading literacy competencies, and foster greater awareness of the importance of reading culture as a foundation for developing inclusive and sustainable human resources. To achieve these objectives, the programme incorporated interactive and experiential learning approaches, including educational games, hands-on activities, and authentic learning experiences.
A total of 56 UM students participated in the programme. Through the collaborative activities, participants were given opportunities to engage with one another, exchange cultural perspectives, and develop their communication and literacy skills in an engaging learning environment.
