Making Waves for Inclusion: 30 Participants Complete USM's Special Needs Swimming Course

PENANG, 27 July 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) successfully organised the Teaching Swimming for Special Needs Course 2026, bringing together 30 participants from diverse backgrounds, including swimming coaches, special education teachers, therapists, parents and caregivers

The one-day programme provided participants with practical and evidence-based knowledge on teaching swimming to children with special educational needs. Sessions covered understanding different diagnoses, recognising behaviours in aquatic settings, water safety and risk management, as well as the application of the A.S.S.I.S.T. Framework to deliver structured and inclusive swimming instruction.

The course was led by Dr. Nur Amalina Samsudin, whose work in inclusive aquatic education has been recognised both nationally and internationally through invited training programmes and lectures in various countries. The programme also offered participants the opportunity to learn from research-informed practices that can be applied directly in schools, swimming academies, therapy centres, and community programmes.

By strengthening the capacity of educators, coaches, and practitioners, the initiative reflects USM's continued commitment to advancing inclusive education and ensuring that more children with special educational needs have access to safe, meaningful, and high-quality swimming instruction.
