Welcoming Thaksin University: A Successful Inbound Mobility Programme

Georgetown - The School of Educational Studies (PPIP) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), particularly the TESOL Cluster, proudly hosted a group of 9 vibrant students from Thaksin University for an enriching Inbound Mobility Programme. The two-week programme, which took place from 29 March 2026 to 11 April 2026, provided the visiting students with a comprehensive blend of academic immersion and cross-cultural exchange. This initiative strongly aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting inclusive education and cross-border cooperation.

Following their arrival and accommodation check-in on 29 March, the delegates officially commenced the programme on the afternoon of 30 March. The Opening Ceremony, held in the Conference Room, was graced by the Deans of both participating institutions.

Academic Immersion (Advancing SDG 4: Quality Education)

A core component of the mobility programme involved structured academic participation, directly supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education) by facilitating shared, equitable, and lifelong learning experiences across borders. The Thaksin University students joined local students for various lectures and tutorials. Students engaged in a number of coursework covering:

  • PET 101: Effective Reading Skills for TESOL
  • PET 102: Oral Skills for TESOL
  • PET 103: Effective Writing for TESOL
  • PET 225: TESOL Curriculum Development

These interactive learning sessions were hosted by lecturers from the TESOL cluster.

Cultural Exchange and Leisure (Supporting SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities)

Beyond academic coursework, the programme was carefully designed to ensure the delegates experienced the local culture and lifestyle. Led by facilitators appointed among the Year 1 TESOL students, numerous afternoon sessions throughout the two weeks were dedicated specifically to leisure and cultural activities. A major highlight was a full-day guided tour around the historic city of Georgetown on 9 April, allowing the delegates to explore the rich heritage of Penang. This appreciation of local history resonates with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which emphasizes efforts to protect and safeguard the world's cultural heritage. Students were also given "free and easy" days over the weekends to independently explore and bond with their peers.

A Memorable Conclusion (Fostering SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals)

The successful two-week programme culminated on the evening of 10 April 2026 with a memorable Closing Dinner held at Bilik Interaksi. The event celebrated the newly forged friendships and academic ties between the two institutions before the students checked out of their accommodations on 11 April for their journey home.

PPIP USM looks forward to continuing this fruitful partnership with Thaksin University and organizing more initiatives that promote globalized learning. This ongoing collaboration acts as a strong testament to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by continuously strengthening international cooperation and capacity-building in higher education.
