Master of Arts (Education)

Master of Arts (Education) Mixed Mode Program aims to promote the professionalism of teachers, teacher trainers, educational administrators and professionals in educational-related services. This program is intended to produce graduates with deep understanding of content knowledge, theories, developments and issues in respective speacialisation areas in education; and who also possess skills to conduct critically reflective education-related research. In total, 12 areas of educational specialisation are offered in this program:
  1. Curriculum Studies
  2. Education Management and Administration
  3. Psychometrics and Educational Measurement
  4. Science Education
  5. English Language Education/TESOL
  6. Educational Technology and Multimedia
  7. Educational Psychology
  8. Mathematics Education
  9. Malay Language Education
  10. Special Education
  11. Early Childhood Education
  12. Higher Education
Applicants can choose the area of specialisation according to their interest and qualification. This program comprises of 50% coursework (20 units) and 50% research (20 units). For the coursework component, students need to complete 3 general courses and 3 specialisation courses. For the research component, students need to complete a dissertation of 25,000 to 30,000 words. The duration of study for full-timers is 1 to 2 years, while for part-timers is 2 to 4 years. Lectures and tutorials are conducted in the evening, between 5pm and 10pm.

Admission Requirements

Applicants should possess the following:
  1. A related Bachelor degree with Honours (at least a Second Class Lower or CGPA 2.75 or equivalent) in the field applied.
    (i) At least 1 year of teaching experience or experience related to education.
    (ii) Local candidate has to fulfil the Bahasa Malaysia requirement.
  2. A Bachelor degree with Honours (at least a Second Class Lower or CGPA 2.75 or equivalent).
    (i) At least 2 years of teaching experience or experience related to education.
    (ii) Local candidate has to fulfil the Bahasa Malaysia requirement.

  • A minimum score of 550 in Paper-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • A minimum score of Band 6.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • Any other requirements approved by USM Senate.

This programme is offered as a mixed-mode programme, i.e. it comprises a component of taught core courses (50%), and a research component (50%). Students may choose to undertake the Master of Arts (Education) Mixed-Mode Degree Programme either as Full-time or Part-time candidates. The minimum duration of study for Full-time candidates is one year (made up of 2 semesters) and for Part-time candidates is two years (made up of 4 semesters).

Program structure

The curriculum for the Master of Arts (Education) Mixed-Mode Programme consists of two components: Coursework Component and Research Component. The total number of units required to graduate is 40 units. Each student must register for 6 courses (with a total of 20 units) in the Coursework Component and the Dissertation (20 units) in the Research Component.

Courses Offered
The Coursework Component
Advanced Research Methodology and Statistics (12 units)
This component aims to enable the candidate to master the process of educational research. The courses deal with various research methods that enable the student to learn research skills, data processing techniques, statistical analysis and the use of computers in data analysis.

Major Areas of Specialisation (28 units)
Candidates have to major one area of specialisationfrom the following:

  • Science Education
  • Educational Technology
  • Curriculum and Instruction
  • TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

Cognate or Substantive Courses (20 units)
Candidates are required to select 5 courses from the Master's or Doctoral courses offered by the School of Educational Studies or other Schools that can support or enhance the scope and depth of the candidate's major.

The Dissertation Component
Candidates are required to select a research topic and carry out an intensive research study under the supervision of a lecturer/supervisor and members of the Dissertation Committee.

Admission Requirements
Applicants should possess the following:

  • A Masters degree.
  • Training and or professional experience in the field of education.
  • Fulfil other requirements determined by the individual areas of specialisation.

  • A minimum score of 550 in Paper- Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or
  • A minimum score of 213 in Computer- Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or
  • A minimum score of 80 in Internet- Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or

  • The applicants native language is English or National language
  • Applicant graduated from institutions of higher learning which use English Language as the medium of instruction.
  • English courses offered by British Council.
  • Passed USM's Intensive English Course Level IV with minimum gred B.
  • English courses offered by selected Public / Private Universities.

The Masters in Counselling by coursework is a counselling programme for counselling teachers, lecturers in counselling and psychology at the college and institution of higher education, people with experience in the field of counselling and psychology, especially those involved in the guidance and helping activities and professionals with experience who give counselling and psychology services. This programme includes a holistic and wide range of counselling areas pertaining theories and approaches of counselling, types of counselling and related counselling issues. Candidates will be given the opportunity to specialize in four counselling areas of their choices.

Programme Objectives

  • To improve the quality of professionals in the field of counselling that focuses in helping the social fraternity.
  • To offer professional courses in counselling and to increase the number of qualified counsellors in Malaysia.
  • To produce integrated human capital. The dynamicity of knowledge in this field has the capacity to guide and help humans to face the challenges for now and future.
  • To fulfil the criteria set by the Malaysia Board of Counsellors under the Counsellor Act. 1998 (Act 580). To recognize Masters in Counselling students as Registered Counsellors and extend them to Practising Certificate which will allow them to practise in the society.
  • As a basic requirement for the practise of Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) and Ph.D.

Programme Structure
The Masters in Counselling programme by coursework has two components. The two components are the core component and the specialization component respectively. The total number of core courses is 35 units and specialization courses are 18 units to graduate. Core component are divided into two categories; generic courses (27 units) and research skills courses (8 units). Meanwhile, specialization component are divided into four areas; Child & Adolescent, Marriage & Family, Crisis and Organization. Candidates are also needed to pass all 12 units of Practicum, Internship and Project courses.

The Masters in Counselling by coursework programme is offered on a fulltime and part time basis at the USM main campus. The duration of the candidature is outlined below.

Research Project / Internship Supervision

Every student registering for PLK598 and PLK 599 courses will be assigned to be under the supervision of a lecturer from the field of guidance and counselling to help them conduct their research and internship. It is the students’ responsibilities to meet their supervisors to discuss and plan the research and internship before any research work is conducted. Students are encouraged to set appointment schedules with their respective supervisors at least once a week. Changing of supervisor is not allowed unless with the approval of the school board.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • Possess a Bachelor Degree (with honours) in any related field, with the minimum CGPA of 2.75 or a lower second class degree.
  • Experienced in the field of psychology and counselling, especially those who are involved in the guidance and helping activities.
